Understanding Attainment 8
Attainment 8 is a national measure of Level 2 attainment which is used to assess a student’s overall academic achievement in their GCSE and equivalent qualifications. The measure considers the grades that students achieve across 8 subjects from the following groups:
2 Core Subjects: Maths and English language or English literature
3 EBacc Subjects: Sciences, humanities and modern foreign languages
3 Open Subjects: Any other subjects
The attainment 8 measure adds up the grades that students achieve in these 8 subjects (with a double weighting for the 2 core subjects) to give an overall points score.
Two examples of attainment 8 score calculations are show below:
Student A Maths = Grade 6 (doubled to 12) English Lang = Grade 5 (doubled to 10) Biology = Grade 6 Chemistry = Grade 6 Physics – Grade 6 Geography = Grade 5 Art = Grade 5 PE = Grade 5 Attainment 8 Score = 55 |
Student B Maths = Grade 4 (doubled to 8) English Lit = Grade 4 (doubled to 8) History = Grade 4 French = Grade 4 Biology = Grade 4 Business Studies = Grade 4 Drama = Grade 4 Music = Grade 4 Attainment 8 Score = 40 |
